Speech: Interprofessional Development Award

2010 Winner: BETTY FRADGLEY, RN

by Hugh Pedersen, President, CLPNA

It is an absolute thrill for me to introduce the Interprofessional Development Award this evening. For some of us it’s a long stretch to remember back to the first time, the first thought that you had of becoming a nurse and working in health care. Without fail, the thought was planted in your head by someone else. Someone sent a tiny wave of thought into your mind that triggered the subconscious.

In a phrase, they are “ripple-makers.” It’s like when you throw a rock into a lake and watch the ripples move out until they are lost from view or they reach the shore. Tonight I want to introduce you to a ripple-maker. Her influence will go on and on. She makes an impact on the way people live and function in their lives. They start to believe in themselves and the impact they have on others and they themselves become ripple makers.

The criteria for this award are:

  • demonstrating exceptional leadership skills
  • fostering a collaborative practice environment
  • promoting professional growth and development
  • creating high functioning inter-professional team(s)
  • articulating the value of LPNs as vital and respected team members
  • advocating for all team members to perform toward their optimal scope of practice

There is very little between ordinary and extraordinary. Just a bit of extra, spending extra time with someone, taking a little extra care when doing the ordinary; discovering that it takes the same amount of time to do the job with compassion. I have several pages of very heart-warming occasions where this individual went above and beyond, like personally purchasing formula for a family with a new baby and was having difficulty in coping, or buying a swim suit and towel for a child who didn’t have one so he would be able to go on the school outing to the pool. Those ripples will go on forever.

This lady has mentored new LPN grads and personally selected people whom she thought demonstrated exceptional skills in a specific area to be part of a team that she did not manage. Her goal was to move people, challenge them and see them advance to another level.

Most recently she was ecstatic to announce that the LPN’s would be working to full scope in the area of an educator role. Through this vision, persistence, patience and guidance she has changed some of the dynamics in an area that was resistant to acknowledge the worth and professionalism of the LPN. She volunteered to facilitate meeting between CLPNA and CARNA with the solitary goal of inter-professional team building. More ripples!!!

She has fostered a collaborative team environment by including PT’s, OT’s, LPN’s, RN’s and IEN’s on Clinical and Consultation Services Teams. This ripple maker has “implemented and arranged for an initiative in Supportive Living to deliver formalized on the job training and education for Healthcare Aides.” “It was a collaborative effort that involved a local college, RN’s and LPN’s from our team, and a partner site,” says one member of the team.

This person has identified the need for the implementation of in-depth training of inter-professional team members in dementia care. Descriptive words and phrases from her sponsors for this award are “expanding horizons, winning attitude, inspirational, unity despite the odds, resourceful, motivator, your success, highlights others accomplishments, determined, helps others to overcome challenges, breaks down barriers for others” and “she has my deep appreciation and respect for recognizing the professional experience, potential and possibility that LPN’s bring to the field.”

Betty Fradgley, would you please come forward and let us thank you for your commitment first of all to your patients, clients and their families, and for your support in the lives of so many LPN’s on their journey to be ripple-makers like yourself. Congratulations on being the first recipient of the Interprofessional Development Award.
