Speech: 2010 Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award
2010 Winner: SHARON RINAS, LPN
by Pat Fredrickson
The recipient of this year’s award has been an LPN for 30 years, worked in multiple settings and always been dedicated to a quest for knowledge and a commitment to excellence with a positive attitude in all she does.
She has embraced a leadership role in the community and blazed new trails for LPNs. Particularly in providing care to medically complex children in their homes, a role previously limited to RNs only. She approached this role with a professional calm, caring, knowledgeable and compassionate manner that readily put the parents, children and critics at ease. Her clinical skill, problem solving, and positive attitude was instrumental in the program’s success and in highlighting the role of the LPN in a community setting.
As a client coordinator, she was a role model that managed staff scheduling, support for LPNs providing direct care, and was the empathetic ear and problem-solver for concerned parents.
This LPN leads by example with professionalism, integrity and respect. This was clearly demonstrated when she worked with medically complex children in the school system. She was able to teach the teachers that vulnerable children need support for emotional and social needs as well as their physical needs. Her collegialty and compassion was instrumental in making this program a success in the school system.
In a new role in the supportive living program, she assisted with the program development and became a trainer for the supportive pathways workshop. She has been a tutor for the HCA program, a preceptor for new staff and a team leader for the internationally-educated nurses. She is the first LPN to be a client coordinator in the integrated supportive living program which is comprised of interdisciplinary professionals. Her new role advocates for the LPN professional in a traditionally dominated RN field of work.
This LPN is highly respected and recognized as a leader and an excellent advocate of LPN professionalism by her team, her peers and her manager.
A leader is a pioneer and Sharon Rinas, you have clearly opened many doors for LPNs with the trials you have blazed. Please join me in congratulating Sharon as the recipient of the 2010 Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award.
