Awards of Excellence

The Fredrickson-McGregor Education Foundation for LPNs invites nominations for the 2010 Awards of Excellence. These three awards honor and pay tribute to LPNs who demonstrate exemplary leadership, nursing education (preceptoring), and practice in Alberta. Award Winners receive $1000, a commemorative crystal award at the Celebration and Awards Dinner during the CLPNA’s Spring Conference on April 8, 2010 in Edmonton, and the individual’s contribution is highlighted in the CARE magazine.

Employers, LPNs, colleagues and students are encouraged to nominate outstanding LPNs for the following:

  • Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award
  • Rita McGregor Excellence in Nursing Education Award
  • Laura Crawford Excellence in Nursing Practice Award

Nominees to the Awards of Excellence must:

  • Meet the Award’s eligibility criteria
  • Hold an Active Practice Permit from CLPNA
  • Be in good standing with CLPNA
  • Reside in Alberta
  • Have actively practiced for at least five years
  • Be currently employed as an LPN.

A written statement giving specific examples related to the eligibility criteria must be included with the Nomination Form. Winners will be chosen by the Foundation’s Selection Committee and will be announced at the CLPNA’s Annual Spring Conference. Only complete applications will be forwarded to the Selections Committee for review.

Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award

The Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award was established in 2007 to honour Pat Fredrickson, a woman of vision, leadership and credibility who served the LPN profession for over 40 years, including 20 years as the Executive Director/Registrar of the CLPNA.Employers and colleagues are invited to nominate outstanding LPNs who consistently demonstrate excellence in leadership through their professionalism, advocacy, communication, and passion for the profession.

Rita McGregor Excellence in Nursing Education/Preceptor Award 

The Rita McGregor Excellence in Nursing Education/Preceptor Award was established in 2007 to honour Rita McGregor, a strong advocate for LPNs who inspired many to share their knowledge and passion for the profession during her 20 years as Director of Practice and Policy for the CLPNA.Employers and students are invited to nominate outstanding LPN Nursing Educators, or a designated Preceptor in a clinical setting, who consistently demonstrates excellence in the provision of nursing education in their workplace.

Laura Crawford Excellence in Nursing Practice Award 

The Laura Crawford Excellence in Nursing Practice Award was established in 1994 to honour Laura Crawford for her strong belief in and commitment to LPNs. Through education, Laura motivated LPNs to demonstrate excellence in nursing practice by improving their knowledge and skills.Employers and colleagues are invited to nominate outstanding LPNs who consistently demonstrate excellence in practice through exemplary nursing knowledge, skills, attitude and judgement; promoting an atmosphere of teamwork; pride in the profession; and mentoring team members.

David King Educational Bursary 

The Fredrickson–McGregor Education Foundation for LPNs extends an invitation to LPNs to apply for the David King Educational Bursary. This bursary was established in 1998 to assist LPNs pursuing Education or Adult Education degrees or certificates, and assists applicants to cover costs associated with tuition, books and materials. Bursary funds are valid for one year for courses applied for between April 30, 2008 and May 1, 2009.LPNs interested in funding other types of educational programs are invited to apply for an Education Grant.

Interprofessional Development Award

A new award has been developed to recognize health care leaders who are instrumental in building quality practice environments. Nominees are chosen by LPNs, who believe that the individual has contributed to an overall positive environment for the health care team. The Award Winner receives a commemorative crystal award at the Celebration and Awards Dinner during the CLPNA’s Spring Conference on April 8, 2010 in Edmonton, a letter of commendation which is sent to their employer, and the individual’s contribution is highlighted in the CARE magazine.

Interprofessional Development Award is given to a person external to the LPN profession who has focused on providing exceptional care to Albertans by;

  • demonstrating exceptional leadership skills
  • fostering a collaborative practice environment
  • promoting professional growth and development
  • creating high functioning interprofessional team(s)
  • articulating the value of LPNs as vital and respected team members
  • advocating for all team members to perform toward their optimal scope of practice

Nominations are initiated by a Licensed Practical Nurse with the support of at least one other health discipline in the nominee’s work environment.
